Frank Herbert was born in 1920 in Tacoma, Washington. He ran away to Arizona in 1939 and lied about his age to get a job as a reporter. He married for the first time in 1940, but divorced five years later. During the Second World War he jouned the U.S. Navy as a photographer but was given a medical discharge after six months. In 1946 he attended the University of Washington where he met his second wife, Beverly Ann Stuart, in a creative writing class.

Frans Herbert's newspaper career left him sufficient time to write sporadically through the late 1940s and 1950s. During this period he published numerous short so=tories, both SF and mainstream literature, and his first novel, The Dragon in the Sea, which appeared in 1955. Dune was unlike any other science fiction novel of its day. At its core was a story more likely to be found in a fantasy novel - that of a young prince who must fight his way back to power after his family has been destroyed by its rivals. Herbert constructed the Dune universe so that, although set in the far future, it featured a society and a political system that perated on the feudal model of the early medieval world. The endless and bitter feuds of Dune's Greate Houses provide a rich source of drama that give the mvel a very broad appeal. The ecological themes and deep world-building, however, raise it well above the pulp narrative of its plotline.

Philp K Dick was born out of his time. One of the most significant sceince fiction writers pf the 20th century, he was also a complex and hugely troubled individual who spent most of his career in near-poverty, yearning for the mainstream recognition that he was destined to receuve only after his death.
